Unite Oregon Condemns Anti-Muslim Violence in New Zealand

Unite Oregon condemns the horrific attack on Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand, which has killed nearly 50 people, and wounded dozens more during Friday prayers at two local mosques. We express our deepest sympathy to the victims of this hate crime and to New Zealand's Muslim communities. No one should fear for their own safety in their house of worship.
An attack on any of our communities is an attack on all of us, and we stand in unconditional solidarity with our Muslim sisters and brothers in Christchurch and across the world. We encourage all members of this community who love justice to give whatever you can to support the victims of this attack. The Masjid At Taqwa and New Zealand Islamic Info Centre have sponsored an online fundraiser to support those impacted by Friday's shooting, available at https://www.launchgood.com/project/support_for_the_families__victims_of_the_new_zealand_mosque_shootings#!/.
In the United States, we know all too well what happens when  bigotry and violence are allowed to fester. In the past several years, we have seen attacks against the Jewish community in Pittsburgh, the Sikh community in Wisconsin, African-American worshipers in South Carolina, and young Muslim women in Portland. Our thoughts and prayers aren't enough in the face of this kind of monstrosity. We must name this for what it is: politically-motivated violence against Muslims, immigrants, refugees, and people of color which is taking place amid a global rise in Islamophobia, xenophobia, and fascism.
We must take bold action to combat white supremacy and right-wing political violence. We call on the Oregon Legislature to immediately pass Senate Bill 577, an update to Oregon's hate crimes laws, which will give law enforcement and community advocates the tools to combat incidents of hate across the state. Call your Senator and Representative in Salem TODAY to tell them that we MUST pass SB 577 to protect vulnerable communities.
Finally, please think of us as a resource for reporting hate incidents and advocacy to end white supremacy. We are here to serve our community. Unite Oregon is a proud member of Portland United Against Hate, a city-sponsored rapid response initiative for hate incidents. You can report hate incidents online at ReportHatePDX.com or by contacting us directly at (503) 287-4117.
