Unite Oregon Applauds City of Hillsboro Leadership on ICE Subpoenas, Encourages Other Cities and Counties to Follow Suit

HILLSBORO, Ore. -- Unite Oregon applauds the City of Hillsboro's decision to refuse to comply with a so-called "administrative subpoena" from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seeking information about an individual detained in the Washington County Jail. These new "subpoenas" are merely another attempt by ICE and its sister agencies in the Department of Homeland Security to unlawfully require local jurisdictions to enforce federal immigration policy.

"For nearly ten years, the federal government has worked aggressively to force city and county law enforcement agencies like the Hillsboro Police to do ICE's work for them," said Kayse Jama, Executive Director of Unite Oregon. "When our immigrant and refugee community members fear that local law enforcement is collaborating with the federal deportation machine, it erodes our ability to trust local police officers and sheriff's deputies. I applaud Mayor Callaway's courageous decision to fight for our communities, and the City's commitment to remain an inclusive and welcoming place for all."

Led by people of color, immigrants and refugees, rural communities, and people experiencing poverty, Unite Oregon works across the state to build a unified intercultural movement for justice. With offices in Medford, Beaverton, and Portland, the organization represents over 14,000 members and supporters. Since 2010, Unite Oregon has been a leader in the campaign to keep local law enforcement out of the business of enforcing unfunded federal immigration mandates.

"Immigrants and refugees live in every city, county, and community in Oregon, and we need to know that we can trust our elected officials to stand up when we are under attack," said Sushma Raghavan, Unite Oregon Field Director. "We call on cities and counties across Oregon to follow Hillsboro's lead and reject these ICE subpoenas."
