Community Development Organizer
Katie Stringer (she/her/hers) has joined the Unite Oregon staff after first serving as the AmeriCorps VISTA member serving as the project coordinator for the Economic Prosperity chapter at Unite Oregon. Katie completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Global Resource Systems in May 2020 at Iowa State University. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Katie moved to Dubuque, Iowa as a child and completed public school there until moving to Ames, Iowa for college. Throughout her Bachelor’s degree, Katie was able to have several international experiences, and worked and studied in China, Peru and Uganda.
While learning about international examples of community development, Katie was able to reflect on inequitable structures hindering development of marginalized communities in her own backyard. She became passionate about breaking inequitable systems and advocating for sustainable livelihoods rooted in justice. Through her international and local professional experiences, Katie became especially interested in urban planning, community and economic development.
Katie arrived in Portland, with her cat Morty, after joining the Unite Oregon team in August 2020. In her free time, Katie enjoys hiking, camping and appreciating the beautiful scenery that the Pacific Northwest has to offer. Her primary language is English, and secondary language is Spanish.
