Join Unite Oregon to Protect Abortion Rights

A fundamental part of Unite Oregon’s work is making sure our communities have access to healthcare. With the help of a grant from Oregon Health Authority (OHA), two years ago we launched a reproductive justice campaign in Rogue Valley focusing on the rights of IR-BIPOC communities to access a reproductive care and make informed reproductive decisions.

Even though abortion is legal in Oregon, many members of the IR-BIPOC community faced cultural and religious barriers. In the case of undocumented immigrants, the fear of being deported also prevented members of the community from accessing their right to safe abortions. We launched this campaign to build trust with members of the community and inform them of the resources available under Oregon's state law. Together with our partners La Clinica and Rogue Community Health, we were able to notify the community about the resources available to them. Rogue Valley Chapter’s leadership council and the Forward Youth Group were also crucial to this outreach campaign.

In order to achieve our goal of giving everyone in the community access to safe abortions, we adopted an intergenerational outreach strategy that involved parents and youth, as well as influential figures in the community, such as church pastors, to shift the narrative and address abortion from a health perspective. Through the most effective community-based communication channels (a monthly average of 250 phone calls, 350 attendees to video calls, community board postings in strategic gathering points for the Latinx community in Ashland, Medford, Talent, Phoenix, Central Point, and White City), we stressed the importance of dialogue between generations to overcome the stigma and come to view reproductive care as healthcare.

Unite Oregon is committed to building upon the experience gained in Rogue Valley to expand our reproductive justice work to the whole state of Oregon.
This campaign is open to everyone who cares about freedom of choice. Visit our section Get Active to learn about the different ways you can support.
