Recapping the 2021 Legislative Session

Recapping the 2021 Legislative Session

The 2021 Legislative session gave Oregon legislators the unique opportunity to invest in our communities, and strengthen Oregon amid the COVID-19 pandemic, climate crisis, and wildfire season.

Unite Oregon and our partners fought for legislation to advance racial, social, and gender justice across the state, and legislators responded by passing key legislation, such as:

• Senate Bill 282, the Tenant COVID Recovery Act, protecting tenants beyond the recently ended pause on evictions

• Senate Bill 778, creating an Office of Immigrant & Refugee Advancement

• House Bill 3265, strengthening Oregon's status as a sanctuary state for immigrants & refugees

• Senate Bill 755, to implement and fund the Drug Treatment and Recovery Act passed overwhelmingly as Measure 110

• House Bill 2935, the CROWN Act, to end discrimination against natural hair styles in schools and workplaces

• House Bill 3073, creating a new Department of Early Learning and Care to better coordinate child care and early learning programs and expand equitable services

As we look ahead to 2022 and beyond, we know that we still have work to do to achieve justice for all of us. We will continue fighting to:

• mitigate the impacts of the climate crisis on our communities and implement policies to address the causes of climate change

• expand access to equitable and affordable housing

• support working families by expanding pre-kindergarten programs

• eliminate anti-Blackness in this state by centering the experiences and leadership of Black Oregonians
