Position Title:
Communications Manager
Reports to: Executive Director
Duration: Full Time, Ongoing
Hours: 40 hours/week
Compensation: $43,000 to $45,000 per year; generous and progressive benefits including medical and dental care 100% of premiums paid by Unite Oregon, paid wellness leave, vacation, flex time, and personal days off.

Unite Oregon is a 501c3 grassroots community organization with three chapters, in Portland, Beaverton, and Medford, Oregon. Unite Oregon believes that all people can become leaders and agents of change in the areas of living wages, racial justice, immigrant and refugee rights, and affordable housing. Unite Oregon is building a unified intercultural movement for justice in our state.

Position Description

Unite Oregon is seeking an experienced, motivated and culturally responsive Communications Manager to develop and carry out the organization's communications plan, including, but not limited to: strategic messaging, press communications, online engagement, writing and publishing reports, Executive Director communications, and dynamic response to current events. The ideal candidate has strong writing skills, direct experience in web publishing and ability to learn new systems, experience in a fast-paced media environment, understands social justice messaging, and is movement-oriented.

Position Responsibilities

Organizational Communication Coordination 20%

  • Work with Executive Director and Associate Director to develop and implement a strategic Annual Communications Calendar

  • Ensure timelines are met 

  • Work with Chapter staff to facilitate their communications timelines and messaging needs at the program level

  • Recruit and manage communications interns; train others on communications

Local and Statewide Media Coordination 20%

  • Write press releases with quick response time

  • Draft opinion editorials on behalf to Oregon members for media outlets

  • Develop talking points, coordinate and direct Speakers’ Bureau to maintain media presence 

  • Track national, state, and local news to gather information pertinent to Unite Oregon’s work

Executive Director Communications 20%

  • Support Unite Oregon’s Executive Director in developing messaging, talking points, testimony, strategic electronic communications to elected officials and other important decision-makers

  • Work closely with Executive Director on framing and messaging for Unite Oregon’s campaigns and programs

Member Communication 20%

  • Coordinate and edit regular e-news to email lists: statewide and regional

  • Create flyers and messages for events and other member-related programs

Social Media 10%

  • Coordinate and schedule day to day posting on Unite Oregon’s Facebook page and Twitter account

  • Develop a digital strategy to support campaigns, projects, major events, etc.

  • Oversee social media analytics with monthly reporting, and strategically respond to trends

Website Management 10%

  • Support in managing Unite Oregon website, including content development and editing.

  • Oversee website analytics with monthly reporting, and strategically respond to trends.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Commitment to racial justice

  • Ability to work with a diverse, multicultural staff, board, membership, and partners of various backgrounds

  • Online advocacy, and digital strategic communications

  • Excellent writing and editing skills

  • Experience with web publishing

  • Highly organized, serious attention to detail and adherence to deadlines

  • Basic graphic design skills
