Beyond Burns: The Growing Patriot Movement in Oregon

Beyond Burns: The Growing Patriot Movement in Oregon

Join us for a presentation by the Rural Organizing Project on what the Patriot movement looks like in Jackson County, Oregon, and across the country. We will learn the political and economic roots of the Patriot movement, how Patriot groups and paramilitaries recruit, and the disruption Patriot groups have caused in communities across the state, including Harney, Grant, Josephine, Crook, and Baker Counties.

Like much of the rest of Oregon, over the last several years, we've seen a rise in militia organizing and activity here in the Rogue Valley. Last year, militia-affiliated individuals organized an anti-Islam rally in Medford, and this past summer, a militia group was handing out snow-cones in a Medford park in an effort to improve their public image. There's already a history of environmental and racial justice organizers & advocates being targeted for threats and intimidation here, but as we've seen this spike in militia activity, we've also seen a rise in threats & intimidation towards already marginalized communities.

The Rural Organizing Project will share Patriot movement strategies and tactics to undermine local democracy in Oregon, including national mass mobilizations, funneling money into city and county-level elections for Patriot candidates, the use of local controversies and vulnerabilities to recruit, and the increasing use of intimidation tactics, vandalism, and threats of violence to silence political opposition. We will also learn how these frontline communities have come together to repair, rebuild relationships, and address the unmet needs of their community. We will also have a brief discussion of what activity is being seen in Jackson County.

The Rural Organizing Project is a nonprofit organization that supports over 50 autonomous groups throughout Oregon to advance democracy in their communities. For the last two years, ROP has worked with community leaders on the frontlines of the Patriot movement to document, analyze, and respond in ways that find common ground and humanize in their frightened and polarized communities. ROP has used the findings of their research to co-author the report Up in Arms: A Guide to Oregon's Patriot Movement with Political Research Associates.
